Comment on this--in class 9/23/10

What do you predict will be the key issues and unresolved issues for the 1850s?

  1. I predict that, although the 1850 compromise was created to get to middle ground on the issue of slavery there will still be much debate over the legalities of slave ownership

  2. The north and south are going to become more and more divided. This will eventually lead to a civil war between the regions that will end any slave based economies in America.

  3. The key issues of the 1850s will probably be slavery and government administration in new territories. Slavery will become more of an issue as the debate of the status of new states arises. This is tied to territorial governments which will help decide by popular sovereignty the slave status of California, New Mexico, and Texas.

  4. I predict that certain states, which I won't name for the sake of suspense *cough cough Kansas and Nebraska cough cough* will, when given popular sovereignty, flood with people from both the north and south, who will have a massive interstate battle royál for slavery or not in the states - the Northerners will want anti slavery for jobs in factories (slaves will work more time for less money), and the Southerners will want slavery for cheaper labor and farming. I also predict that this will later be named 'Bleeding Kansas' and be a foreshadowing mini-war which will be the spark that ignites the flame of civil war.

  5. There will be just more issues of slave ownership.

  6. I think that this compromise is going to lead to greater division between the country and that you cant have two stands on slavery in one country

  7. I think the key issues will be the formation of new state administrations for the new states and also popular sovereignty regarding slavery in the new states will be a big issue.

  8. the compromise between the north and south probably wont last. the north still has more states and i am sure that the south will eventually be uncomfortable with the imbalance

  9. i predict that a variety of boundary issues and the issue of slavery. texas was a slave state before they got it and an issue would be if it will stay a slave state or not.

  10. I predict the nation will become more divided and there will be a bigger issue than there currently is over slavery.
